Nitra

Picturesque Nitra is, alongside Bratislava, the oldest town in Slovakia. Most of the sights are concentrated in the old town, made up of the castle, the upper town and the lower town. We will see Nitra Castle with its interlocking churches, the bishop’s residence and the surrounding fortifications with a single gate — one of the most interesting building complexes in Slovakia. The castle, high above a meander of the river Nitra, was probably built at the time of the fall of Great Moravia and got its present appearance in the 17th century. The main sight is St Emmeram’s Cathedral, the seat of the bishop. Free time to visit a museum or shop along the long pedestrian zone.
