Oponice Castle

The mysterious 16th-century château of the noble Apponyi family enchants with its history. The restored Renaissance château, surrounded by an English park with many exotic trees, lies in the picturesque village of Oponice, just 20 km from Nitra and 15 km from Topoľčany. It houses one of the largest libraries in Central Europe, the Bibliotheca Apponiana, whose renovated rooms hold almost 17,300 valuable books from the Baroque period. Visitors experience history up close — every page of the precious folios literally breathes the atmosphere of past centuries. Josephine Baker once danced on the billiard table here for the guests… Oponice Château was named Cultural Monument of the Year 2010.
