About the excursion
Two interesting towns lie on the Danube. On the Hungarian side, in Esztergom, we discover the coronation cathedral of Stephen, the first King of Hungary; this is also where the picturesque Danube Bend begins. We travel upstream via Štúrovo to Komárno on the Slovak side of the Danube. The town has the largest fortress of the Habsburg monarchy — architects still admire the three lines of the mighty 16th–17th-century fortifications built against the Turks, and efforts are under way to add the fortress to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Europe Square, a symbol of European unity, is unique.
